HIST. Prêtre gaulois, appartenant à la seconde classe de la hiérarchie druidique, chargé des sacrifices, des augures, des actes de la vie civile et pratiquant la médecine. Les ovates, vêtus de noir (...) Gardent le chef sacré (LECONTE DE LISLE, Poèmes barb., 1878, p.115).
Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1858 (FEUILLET, Rom. j. homme pauvre, pp.98-99). D'un lat. ovates, de même sens que le lat. vates «devin, prophète»; gr. «devins», irl. faith «prophète» (v. DOTTIN). Déjà en angl. en 1723 comme mot lat. (v. NED).
